The three-day celebrations of 969th Urs of Syed Ali Hajveri, known as Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, started with zeal and fervour on Tuesday.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated the Urs of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh by Chadar Poshi (covering the grave with a sheet) and laying wreath on the grave. He prayed for the solidarity, prosperity and stability of the country. Later, the CM inaugurated Sabeel by drinking milk. The ceremony was also attended by Chairman Religious Committee Data Darbar, Senator Ishaq Dar, Provincial Ministers Ehsan-ud-Din Qureshi, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Nadeem Kamran, Members National and Provincial Assemblies, Inspector General Police, Secretary Auqaf, and a large number of devotees as well as Ulema and Mashaikh.
Milk sabeels (free distribution of milk points), which is special feature of three-day celebrations, have been set up where a hug number of devotees thronged to drink the milk. More than 200 volunteers are on duty to facilitate the devotees during the Urs. The area of Bhatti Chowk wears a cheerful look with eatable stalls, shopkeepers, magicians and acrobats. Hundreds of thousands of devotees from all over the country reached in the City to pay homage to the great Sufi saint. Dancing on the drum beat, the devotees lay chaddars on the grave. The dancing groups of devotees can be witnessed in every corner of the City, marching towards the shrine. On the other hand, Naat and Qirat competitions are also underway. The event also includes Mehfil-e Sama, seminars on the saint’s teachings, poetry, speech competitions, which are participated by noted scholars and mashaikh from all over the country besides devotees.
The langar (free-eatable) are being distributed in area of Bhatti Chowk and Bilal Gung. The provincial government has taken special security measures by deploying heavy police contingents on all eight roads leading to the shrine.
The Urs is said to be the biggest event of the province which attracts more than three million devotees from across the country every day during three days.
District Coordination Officer Lahore Noor-ul-Amin Mengal also visited the shrine of Hazrat Data Gunj Bakhsh to inspect the security arrangements on the occasion of Urs.
He said that 20 CCTV cameras had been installed around the shrine to keep a vigilant eye on suspected people and for security purpose. He also stated the volunteers of Civil Defence had been performing their duties on the entrance and exit points of shrine.
The DCO also visited the control room of chehlum Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S) and Urs of Hazrat Data Gunj Bakhsh at DCO Office. The DCO briefed MNA Pervez Malik and MPA Kh. Imran Nazir about the security arrangements.
The City District Government Lahore has announced local holiday in connection with the Urs of Data Gunj Bakhsh and Chelum Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A). The local holiday will be observed on January 03 (Thursday). All educational institutions will remain close on local holiday.
